Factual Programme Production - Theory

Accuracy

Accuracy is a huge part in factual programming because of many reasons. Accuracy is when you have information  and you for example are a news reporter and if you tell the correct information, its all right and not misleading in any kind of way, this is accuracy, it means that everything you are talking about is as accurate as it can get. If you did not tell the truth, for example if someone got shot by a man and then the news reporter went on to say that he was shot by  a women, this would not be accuracy, because you are not telling no where near the truth of who shot him.

Not telling the truth can have many causes at the end of it, it could ruin your career at the moment and the career you may have in the future, because no one may want to hire you because of your past of not telling the correct information. I will show an example below

Fox news are known for the dishonesty they have on their news, for many reason but here is one which I have found

According to HERE Fox news used over 93% of the information they broadcasted in 2012 about climate change was misleading

"The Wall Street Journal, News Corporation’s other media flagship, didn’t fare much better. The report also included WSJ opinion pieces over the last year and found 81% of their climate change coverage was misleading."

Fox are also very known to have a lot of their charts to be not accurate at all and very misleading

also companies such as Virgin media are known to not have that much accuracy in their ads because they claim that their inten

Impartiality

Impartiality is when you have information on a certain subject which has two different sides to it, for example if  two neighbors are arguing about one of them claiming that the other ones dog is pooping on their  lawn, you have to show both sides to it so people do not get mislead to just believe one side to the story without seeing the other part of the story, this delves into bias opinions but I will talk about that later.

For example in the elections lately, every news corporation is required legally to have impartiality on the elections, this is so they do not sway peoples opinions to another side without hearing another side and also not that many people of an older age get their information from other players except the news so they find out exactly what is going on through the news the most of the time

For example if there is 5 people in an election and for example sky news just show three of the people running in the election, they are braking the law because it is legally required that they have to show all sides to it.

Subjectivity

Subjectivity is when for example if a reporter is outside a stadium and he supports one certain team and the other team they are playing, which he does not like, he talks about his own personal opinion about them, because reporters are not there for that, they are there to talk about what is happening and get opinions from sides so they are not bias and they will be impartial to both teams. If you do end up being objective and talk about your opinion as a reporter there can be consequences depending on what was said, the measure of it

for example the video which i have, she is bringing her own opinion into it and her feelings on the subject of weed being legalised and in the end she did win and weed was legalised for recreational use in Alaska

but not all the time does it work out, maybe this lady will not be able to get another job as a news reporter but others may see her as a independent women who will speak out and is very confident.  This is just one of examples of the many times this kind of thing has happened live on TV

Objectivity

Objectivity is when you say something and you are saying the reality of it, what is really going on, you pretty much have to give your reasons why, for example if you say that is bad it is counted as subjectivity unless you give the reason why you think that about it

Objectivity is what news reporters have to be, when they talk about certain things they have to back it up so it does not sound like someones biased opinion and its the professional way to go at it if you are a news reporter because otherwise you may mislead people with what you are talking about because you are not giving the points behind it that makes it valid

for example ITV news are objective, they are more objective when you get something such as fox news which in some cases can be very subjective, they just say anything that they want to in some cases.

for example in this video which I have got from youtube, it is a debate which they have both talked about their opinion and the reality of what is going on, why it is happening and what they could do to resolve it.

Balance

Balance connected with biased, Balance is a big part in factual programming but mostly the news because it means they have to show both sides, keep it balanced, so for example if something bad happened between two different countries, it does not look like they are favoring one side compared to the other side

FOX is a huge part of this because they are not balanced, they just put whatever on because people like seeing things go different and it gets them views and in most cases they get away with what they are doing

it is also a huge part in documentaries its better to get both sides so people do not get mislead during the documentary, they hear both sides of what is going on, this is how you create balance in the factual programming part of the media

for example this which was on sky news, the election debate, they allowed them all to have their opinion and why they should have your vote, they were all given time to talk about what they want to talk about, this is balance in a way.

This is just one way of balanced in the news, their is also short videos they have on the news which have two people explaining their side, like a debate like this

Opinion

Opinions are a big impact in the factual programming part of the media because of how much of an effect opinions can be from a normal person and someone who is famous, usually when they are famous the opinion they have is usually valued a lot more than a normal persons opinion.

Certain News Companies let their opinion known of what they think of certain things but other News companies, do not they interview people and get it from them, so it does not come directly from them, because then it can be tracked back to them

Some News Companies like FOX are very loud about their opinion, they like everyone to know, they usually do not try to hide what they think

http://mediamatters.org/blog/2011/01/26/news-corp-admits-fox-news-is-opinionated-news/175599

for example in that link it talks about how FOX is very opinionated compared to other News companies.

some people like opinionated news because its different and some people may think unethical in the News industry, but others like it.

Because you would of thought Fox News would have learnt by now to not have opinionated News

Bias

Bias is when a certain company or someone may support a certain side of an argument compared to the other side and they will make it clear that they support the other side, I talked about this earlier, to not be biased you have to make it look like you are not supporting neither side of the argument.

This is crucial in the News because of the amount of views they get and the news is just meant to give you information of what  is going on either locally or worldwide.

For example if there is a strike going on for teachers and the news send a reporter over there, they can not be biased and clearly be leaning to support one side of it, they will probably talk to one of the teachers and one of the people which are against this strike and want it to end, they do this so it does not make them look like they support a certain side compared to the other side.

The reason they can not be biased is because it can change peoples opinions. A lot of people seem to get their information from the news, when I say a lot of people, I meant people estimated at the age of 50 and over because they are not used to technology, they prefer to stick to the TV and get their news from there rather than the internet

for example if you compare a News company like ITV to FOX news you can see the different, FOX are a lot more bias to what THEY think is right not anyone else's opinion, they make this obvious throughout their broadcast.

If you watch an ITV news broadcast you can tell their aim is more to get the news of both sides to you rather than one of what they think is right, they make sure they get both sides so people can form their own opinion on it. They are not here to judge what is going on but to broadcast it to the public.

NEWS. CODES AND CONVENTIONS

Studio News Readers

these are the people which you usually see on the news, the ones that present the news as you are watching it, they are there to provide you of what is happening around the world/locally in a format which is easy for most people to understand

what do they do?

they do a multiple of things but the one which is most obvious is that they present the news to you, they can be two or just one presenting, they also sometimes bring people on which have knowledge of a person subject which is going on and it has high importance, they will bring him/she on to debate about it or just talk about it, get their opinion of what is going on. They sometimes do the interviews on a location which seems fitting to the subject which they will be talking about

they also conduct some of the research which goes into it, they will sometimes put it all together in the way which they want it, which story goes first, pretty much the structure throughout the broadcast of the News.

They also help with the scripts throughout the broadcast, this connects to the structure of the broadcast and the style of it, it is live but it is all planned with what goes after what.

They also provide briefing to the crew of what is going to happen. They do more behind the camera than in front of it in some cases
